La Consorteria delle Tenebre

The viola da gamba quartet Consorteria delle Tenebre was founded in spring 2016 from the meeting of four internationally trained musicians specialized in early music practice who perform in Italy and abroad, both as continuo players and soloists. The musicians perform on copies of historical instruments, playing pieces by Italian, French and English composers from the Renaissance and very early Baroque period, and adapting with great versatility to the different interpretative musical styles.

In addition to the desire to introduce the public to the beautiful and vast musical repertoire for consort viols, the ensemble aims to approach the vocal Renaissance repertoire and performs it in an instrumental transcription for gamba consort. By paying particular attention to the structure and articulation of the written text and working together to achieve a precise, clear and homogeneous, the ensemble wishes to imitate the expressive capacity of human voice as closely as possible.

The Consorteria delle Tenebre not only performs as a quartet, but also works with various musicians, vocal ensembles and solo singers. Among the most important collaborations to be mentioned is the one with cornetto player Andrea Inghisciano, with whom the ensemble performs the vast Italian madrigal repertoire of the 15th and 16th centuries, the one with the singer-songwriter Vinicio Capossela, with whom the ensemble debuted in 2016 at the Calitri Festival with a concert dedicated to Carlo Gesualdo  da Venosa, the one with the countertenor Carlo Vistoli and, recently, with the actress Laura Morante with a programme dedicated to Francesco Petrarch and the music composed to his lyrics.

In 2022 their first cd SOTTO IL SILENTIO DELLA NOTTE OSCURA will be released by Novantiqua Records.
