"Reconstructing the music of a chant by using the neumes of adiastematic notation as a guide is an act of creativity. The neumes, these symbols from which the musical signs of our current notation developed from and of which we have evidence of use from the 9th to the 11th century, traced above the words of a song, were a useful mnemonic aid for those who already knew the melody to be sung, having learned it from other singers. Few indications that we can nevertheless try to follow in order to listen to hypotheses of musical reconstruction, attempts that lead us to think about the oral nature of this repertoire, the ways in which it spread in Europea and the evolution of musical notation." So writes Silvia Kuro in the booklet of this incredible Album revealing what kind of work is behind the curtains of this recording. Davide Daolmi, one of the major Middle Age researcher of our times write in the booklet too: "What we hear creates what we see. We listen to music from a thousand years ago to "see" the Middle Ages. Or rather, to validate the Middle Ages we believe we already know: from school readings, novels, poems, pictures, movies, TV series, paintings. These are modern inventions built upon a past, so distant in time that it could as well be another planet, of which we know so little that almost any fantasy can pass as legitimate. This is the point where we should start before assuming any single note of medieval music is true."
