The word Passacaglia probably derives from the Italian words "passare" (trad. go trough) and "calle" (the little streets o Venice). The fusion of the two words and the imagine of slow and silent walking is the origin of the musical form of the Passacaglia on a "walking bass" as ground.
The Italian guitarist Giuseppe Ugo Mazzone presents a recital CD following the path of the “passacaglia”, the italian ground coming probably from the idea of walking/passare in the calle/venetian little streets. So, starting from the Follia ground with Handel, Giuliani and Sanz, Mazzone brings us trough the time and the styles with Weiss, Rodrigo, Tansman, Poulenc and Brouwer. At beginning and at the end of this recording two original compositions by Tiziano Bagnati and Giuseppe Ugo Mazzone himself: teacher and scholar. Last but not least the two compositions by Baratello and Stummer close the program in a perfect balance between well known repertoire and unknown new music for solo guitar.
