"When I was young, I wrote music without asking toomany questions, that is, without being aware of thequestionsIwasasking, andaskingmyself.Iwrotebydigging into the sound of the instruments, and thisdigging was my only horizon of consciousness: I wasyoung.
In the African-American musical culture throughwhich I entered music, one of the fundamentalconcepts is the personalization of sound: within acollective expression, each musician strives for amanifestation of individuality whose recognizabilityis a prerequisite for communal experience.
It is likely that my digging was nothing more than aradical manifestation of this particular point of view, which, however, also encountered others, heritageof more recent music with a written tradition – theexperimentalism, not only American, of the 1960sand 1970s, and the experiences of Nono, Sciarrino, and Lachenmann, among others."
