Apra Finestra!

PassiSparsi is a vocal ensemble from Florence particularly attentive to the secular a cappella repertoire and "Apra Fiestra!" is its debut album. "Apra Fiestra!" celebrates the musical genre of Moresca, to which the ensemble has dedicated a long study supported by ethnomusicologist Gianfranco Salvatore. The Moresca has always fascinated musicians with the language of its lyrics, which are seemingly incomprehensible but instead full of references to the world of linguistic minorities present in Naples in the 15th and 16th centuries, often linked to the world of slaves from Africa. These languages almost become a hidden message of human beings lost in the darkness of history that today come to us through the centuries, thanks to the musical form of Moresca.

The canzoni moresche are a world of masks. The performers who wear those masks may well recognize in them the embodiment of a certain vision of the Other, or project their own onto them; yet by using the mask one also accepts to become that Other, to step into their shoes, lending them one’s own voice. In this sense, the mask does not serve to create distance, but to foster proximity. In our present time—still sustained by forms of slavery more or less tolerated, still marked by division between dominant groups and marginalized minor- ities, or masses—to take on the mask of the loves- truck slave can be embraced as a renewed exercise in humanizing the Other. That is, the masks are worn as if they simply stood for humanity itself: a humanity with which we can identify and empathize, beyond any historical or cultural boundaries. Smiling at the absurdity of the little tales we find ourselves telling through the mask; recognizing ourselves in the naïve passion of their protagonists; admiring their virtues and inhabiting their flaws as if they were our own, without judgment; finding ourselves in the Other. And vice versa.

PassiSparsi è un ensemble vocale di Firenze particolarmente attento al repertorio a cappella profano e "Apra Fiestra!" è il suo album di debutto. "Apra Fiestra!" celebra il genere musicale della Moresca a cui l'ensemble ha dedicato un lungo studio affiancato dall'etnomusicologo Gianfranco Salvatore. La Moresca ha da sempre affascinato i musicisti per il linguaggio dei testi, apparentemente incomprensibile ma invece pieno di riferimenti al mondo delle minoranze linguistiche presenti a Napoli nel '400 e '500, spesso legate al mondo degli schiavi provenienti dall'Africa. Questi linguaggi diventano quasi un messaggio nascosto di esseri umani sapriti nel buio della storia che attraverso i secoli è arrivato a noi tramite la forma musicale della Moresca.

Le canzoni moresche sono un mondo di maschere. Gli artisti che indossano quelle maschere potrebbero ben riconoscerle l'incarnazione di una certa visione dell'Altro, o proiettare su di esso la propria; eppure usando la maschera si accetta anche di diventare quell'Altro, di mettersi nei loro panni, prestando loro la propria voce. In questo senso la maschera non serve a creare distanza, ma a favorire la prossimità. Nel nostro tempo presente —ancora sostenuto da forme di schiavitù più o meno tollerate, ancora segnate dalla divisione tra gruppi dominanti e minoranze emarginate, o masse— assumere la maschera dell'amore-camion schiavo può essere abbracciato come un rinnovato esercizio di umanizzazione dell'Altro. Vale a dire che le maschere vengono indossate come se rappresentassero semplicemente l'umanità stessa: un'umanità con cui possiamo identificarci ed entrare in empatia, al di là di qualsiasi confine storico o culturale. Sorridere all'assurdità delle piccole storie che ci ritroviamo a raccontare attraverso la maschera; riconoscerci nella passione ingenua dei loro protagonisti; ammirare le loro virtù e abitare i loro difetti come se fossero i nostri, senza giudizio; ritrovarci nell'Altro. E viceversa.
